The Makena Beach area was ordained as a State Park after a campaign by locals to protect one of their most treasured shorelines. Despite its deceptive name, the park in fact comprises three beaches – the descriptively titled Big Beach and Little Beach, with the black volcanic sands of One’uli Beach a small walk away around the point.Towering over all of them is the dormant cinder cone known as Pu’ Ola’i – or Earthquake Hill – whose 110-metre peak can be reached along a rugged footpath accessible from Little Beach. Remember to take a bottle of water with you as the climb is thirsty work! The hike is fairly demanding, but the effort will be rewarded with glorious views along the length of the coastline and out to sea. Keep an eye out for the crescent-shaped Molokini Atoll in the Bay, a seabird sanctuary which can be reached by boat.Nestled snugly between two outcrops of rock at the southernmost point of Maui, the ‘Big Beach’ is a stretch of clean white sand almost a kilometre long and more than 100 metres wide. Lifeguards patrol the glistening sands, so swimming and snorkelling are popular activities. Take care though, as the waves breaking along the shore harbour have an impressive strength.Makena is the Hawaiian term for ‘abundance’, a title which becomes clear when you see the plethora of sea-life residing in the sparkling, temperate waters near to the shore. When you fancy a break from the water, head for the soothing shade of the kiawe trees dotting the edge of the shoreline.Little Beach is a popular spot for naturists as it is one of the few areas in Hawaii which allows people to sunbathe naked. On Sunday afternoons, this small stretch of sand hosts traditional Hawaiian dancing and drumming ceremonies, so head along if you are interested in getting to know the local culture.Active types will want to head further north still, as the distinctive black sands of One’uli Beach are in close proximity to a teeming coral reef which is a great destination for divers and snorkelers. The ground near the sea can be sharp so take care as you head towards the water.
