Take a break from winery-hopping and bus tours to spend a day among the flowers, fountains and fun at one of Hunter Valley’s most popular tourist attractions. Set over 10 hectares at the foot of the stunning Brokenback Mountains, the variety of exquisite gardens and child-friendly displays at Hunter Valley Gardens mean you’re guaranteed a fun-filled day out with all the family.Opened in Pokolbin in 2003, the gardens have original and striking designs that ensure a memorable experience for visitors. The 10 themed gardens, each incorporating the style of a particular corner of the globe are the gardens' main highlight. Step into Renaissance Italy as you make your way among the lavish, polished-marble statues in the Italian Grotto, or be amazed at the intricate patterns in the Indian Mosaic garden.Marvel at the 10-metre-tall waterfall over the Sunken Garden and let the incredible perfume of over 8,000 roses of every possible colour envelop you in the Rose Garden – this park is a real treat for all the senses. As you might have guessed, the Storybook Garden is aimed at younger guests and the statues and topiary trees shaped to look like nursery rhyme characters will make you feel as if you have stepped into a Disney film! The entrance to this children’s paradise is through the pages of a huge storybook and, once inside, kids will gleefully discover Humpty on his wall, Jack and Jill on their hill, and Alice at her tea party. During the colder months the garden is transformed into a winter wonderland with fairy lights and penguin statues creating a delightful atmosphere. After you’ve finished your fun-filled tour, simply relax on the manicured lawns for a picnic lunch or sit down to a meal at the Irish pub on site which also serves craft beers. If a day isn’t enough to explore the 8 kilometres of paths in the gardens, why not check into one of the guest rooms provided by the pub?Hunter Valley Gardens are open every day except for Christmas Day. There is an admission fee but parking is free. The Rover Coaches bus service will bring you here from many of the region’s townships. Tickets are cheaper for kids and the gardens are wheelchair and pram accessible.
