Watch fishing boats returning with their day's catch, enjoy a coffee in the fresh sea air or board a ferry bound for Crete’s nearby islands in this dynamic harbour.

The lookout above Heraklion Port offers one of the city’s most beautiful panoramas. Watch as fishing boats skim the water’s surface as they head out to sea or return from the bright horizon. See an ancient fort that has stood watch for 400 years and then plan a meal at one of many waterfront restaurants. The small ferries you’ll see cruising in and out of the port offer memorable daytrips to nearby islands.

As you explore Heraklion Port, note its two main areas. One is the ancient Venetian port, while the other is a modern transportation hub with regular ferries and numerous restaurants, shops and tourist information booths. Those arriving by boat are very likely to pass through here, as it is Crete’s busiest port.

Explore the harbour on foot and see the best of the waterfront. Visit Venetian monuments framed by the colourful fishing boats moored behind. Tour the Koules Fortress, an outpost built to withstand attacks from invaders. Walk the harbour wall and find a relief of the winged lion of St. Mark.

Look towards the city and spot high Venetian arches, which are known as Arsenali. These storage spaces were used for boat repair and also to safely house gunpowder and weaponry. Find a nice café along the harbour front and savour a traditional Greek meal, cooked using olive oil and fresh vegetables.

At the modern Heraklion port, board a ferry bound for one of Crete’s neighbouring islands. Book a cruise and take the day to enjoy some time at sea. Nearby, an attractive promenade along the seafront is home to more restaurants and shops.

Find Heraklion Port by following 25th of August Street to its end. It is a 15-minute walk from Heraklion’s town centre.
