Use Dubrovnik's main port as a base to explore the nearby Elaphiti Islands, or sample the delights of its famous fresh food market.

Nestled in a sheltered bay just 2 kilometres from the Old Town, Gruž Harbour is Dubrovnik's maritime hub. The city's bus terminal is located just next to the port, so if you hop on a bus in the Old Town you can be there in 10 minutes. From Gruž Harbour, take a scenic boat trip to the nearby islands of Lopud, Sipan and Koločep. These beautiful isles are well worth a visit, but don't try to cram them all in to one day – you'll need a few hours to explore each one.Just beyond the Elaphiti Islands, Mljet Island is home to the vast Mljet national park. This reserve, which occupies the western part of the island, is a romantic mix of lush forest, hidden beaches, dark caves and stunning salt lakes. You can get here in just two hours by ferry from Gruž Harbour. Check the Dubrovnik Tourism Board's official website for up-to-date timetables.Gruž Harbour is also a popular destination in its own right. A favourite with locals and visitors alike, the harbour's daily fruit, vegetable and fish market, located near the ferry terminal, is not to be missed. Stock up on local fruit and vegetables, such as oranges, figs, tomatoes and cabbages, or buy some of the region's famous goat's cheese, olive oil or wine to bring home with you. When you've finished shopping, walk along the promenade and admire the view as yachts, cruise ships and ferries dock at this bustling port. Or take an ice-cream to one of the many benches and simply soak up the atmosphere of this quieter part of town. If you need something more substantial, why not stop off at one of the many waterside restaurants? It takes about 20 minutes to walk from the Old Town to Gruž Harbour. Alternatively you can avail of the regular bus services or, if you're travelling by car, you'll find paid parking on the streets and a 24-hour car park at the harbour itself.
