Visit the Florida Keys to experience a charming island getaway. This archipelago lies off the coast of mainland Florida, 24 kilometres (15 miles) south of Miami. Visitors come in droves to enjoy its balmy climate, pristine beaches and colourful marine environments.
The archipelago’s main town, Marathon, lies at the centre of the islands and is easily accessed by its airport. You can also come by car from Miami along the Overseas Highway. It’s a 2-hour road trip to the island of Key Largo, where there are plenty of attractions. Spot the unique formations of the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, examine native species at the National Marine Sanctuary or enjoy the scents of the flora and fauna at the Botanical State Park.
Take a half-day to experience the islands in the Islamorada region of the Florida Keys. Go fishing and then swim with dolphins at the Theater of the Sea. Back on land you can walk along tree-lined paths through the Indian Key Historic State Park.
Further south, the town of is well known for its seafood celebrations and family-oriented activities. Take the kids to play on Sombrero Beach or walk on scenic trails around Crane Point. Watch the sun set from Seven Mile Bridge, which connects Marathon to the Florida Keys’ southern islands. If you’re here in April, join in the annual fun run that crosses the bridge.
In Big Pine Key, discover the natural ecosystem at a local freshwater quarry, The Blue Hole. This picturesque area now makes up part of the National Key Deer Refuge. Explore the town to find a number of restaurants, bars and a shopping centre.
Visit Key West, the southernmost point of the archipelago where you’ll find the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. The famous writer spent many years in the old homestead, inspired by the beautiful natural surroundings and year-round good weather of the Florida Keys.
