Key Largo is the largest island in the Florida Keys archipelago. This natural wonder provides excellent diving opportunities, pristine beaches and a secluded environment. Join in eco-friendly tourist activities and explore mainland America’s only living coral reef.
Get in touch with the famous Florida ecosystems at the Everglades National Park on Key Largo’s west side. The mix of fresh water from the Everglades and saltwater from Florida Bay creates ideal conditions for many animal species. Take a kayaking tour to spot crocodiles, alligators and the manatees and sea turtles that thrive in these waters.
On Key Largo’s east side, the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is home to colourful underwater scenes. Go scuba diving to see tiny fish interact with their craggy coral homes. Spot the Christ of the Abyss, a bronze statue of Christ that lies on the ocean floor. You can also explore the park by kayak or as part of a boat tour. Stay for a few nights at one of the nearby campsites. Electricity and water are included in the cost of a site.
Find more snorkelling opportunities at the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Visitors are asked to observe the park’s regulations that aim to protect this fragile habitat.
Away from the water, take a walk in the Florida Keys Wild Bird Centre. This park is home to a number of bird species that were rescued from the wild, including egrets, hawks and spoonbills.
Access Key Largo from the mainland via two main car routes: U.S. Route 1 and the Card Sound Bridge. U.S. Route 1 runs through the centre of the island and is where many of its hotels, restaurants and bars are found. The four-lane highway is best travelled on by car.
Visit Key Largo at any time of year. True to southern Florida’s famous climate, the area is warm and sunny year-round.
