Whether you’re an expert stargazer or an interested amateur, you'll find answers to all the big questions in this planetarium.

The Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Centre has a place in history as the world’s first full-dome cinema screen. The technology is capable of showing horizon-to-horizon images in a 360-degree space. The swinging 60s heritage of this architectural icon makes it a must for visitors to the area and has also earned it a place in the National Register of Historic Buildings.

An early start is the best way to get the most out of the planetarium experience, as getting there in the morning will give you the chance to fully enjoy exhibits on various aspects of space, before enjoying the shows screened in the afternoon and evening. Among the more notable exhibits is a 450-kilogramme meteorite found in Nevada in 1908. To get a better understanding of the rotation of the earth, check out the Foucault Pendulum. The centre regularly alters and upgrades exhibits, so it’s worth considering a return visit. This is especially true given that admission is free meaning if you time your visit to coincide with a changeover of exhibitions, you can enjoy both in one visit to the region.

The educational joys of the science centre give way to the planetarium, where lessons come in the form of luxurious visual experiences comprising photography, videography, lighting and sound. Varying in topic from the ancient astronomy of the Mayan people to the more contemporary issue of climate change, the shows will engage and inspire audiences of all ages. Show times do vary, however, so ensure you check online to secure tickets and plan before arriving.

The Live Sky Tonight Star Talk show features guest astronomers guiding attendees through the night sky. These informative talks are on offer on the first Friday of every month and include the opportunity to gaze at the outer reaches of the solar system through telescopes afterwards.

The Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center is open every day and is located on the University of Nevada Reno campus. This is about five minutes' drive to the north of downtown. Free parking is available, or you can take the Sierra Spirit bus from downtown.
