Spot rare birds and woodland animals as you stroll along this wooden boardwalk with the magnificent Waccamaw River flowing by your side.

Flowing approximately 225 kilometres before joining the Atlantic Ocean near Georgetown, the Waccamaw River is a stand-out feature of South Carolina. Where it connects with the historic town of Conway, you will find the wooden Waccamaw Riverwalk.

Straight away, you will notice that the river water appears to be black. This black colour is due to decaying plant matter. Known as Blackwater Rivers, these slow moving waterways are found mainly in the country’s southern region.

The riverwalk is home to a huge variety of wildlife and different species of tree including Cypresses and Oaks, which you will notice are often covered in silvery Spanish moss. These trees provide the perfect habitat for birds such as ospreys, kingfishers and hawks. If you are very lucky you may also spot alligators, otters, beavers, deer and even bobcats.

If you continue along the boardwalk, you will eventually come to the Waccamaw Memorial Bridge, which is dedicated to the Horry County war veterans. There is a wonderful arboretum showcasing native regional plants as well as several other wooden buildings which all add to the sense of natural beauty that is here in abundance. Visit in autumn when the leaves begin to change colour and the effect is quite spectacular.

People walk, jog or cycle along the riverwalk but for a different perspective, why not take to the water for part of your journey. Conway Kayak Tours based in Conway offers both guided tours that come complete with plenty of factual information about the history of the river or, if you are an experienced paddler you can hire one of their kayaks to take out and explore by yourself.

The majority of the riverwalk is situated in the town of Conway around 24 kilometres inland of Myrtle Beach. The town itself is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places and offers a fascinating glimpse into what life would have been like in the early 19th century. After you have finished your walk, there is still plenty left to explore.
