Classic cars, military history and an impressive arch can all be found in this park in the centre of the city.

One of the most eye-catching attractions in Brussels is the Cinquantenaire Arch in Jubilee Park, which was built to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Belgium’s independence. The King of Belgium Leopold II wanted the world’s second tallest and widest triumphal arch constructed in time for the 1880 World Exhibition, but it wasn't actually completed until 1905. The arch is the park’s centrepiece and sits among perfectly manicured lawns and walkways. Climb to the top of the arch for spectacular views over the city’s European quarter, where several European Union institutions can be found.

The park was built on former military exercise grounds and boasts attractive gardens and three museums. Original structures include the Bordiau Halls, which were inspired by London’s Crystal Palace. Inside here you will find the Royal Military Museum which has an impressive collection of 19th century war memorabilia, including fighter planes and weapons.

Lovers of all things car-related shouldn't miss Autoworld in the southern section of the park building. There are hundreds of vintage cars on display here, and the museum traces the history of transport, from horse-drawn carriages to right through to a blank space symbolising “the future” and what’s still to come.

Also in the south wing is the Cinquantenaire Art Museum, which also contains the Museum for the Blind, offering a sensory experience for blind and visually impaired visitors to explore the world of art through touch.

Once you've explored everything that the museums have to offer, enjoy a walk through the park or find a spot on the lawn and enjoy a picnic by the fountain.

The nearest metro stations are Schuman to the west of the park, and Mérode immediately to the east. If you are coming by car, there is street parking nearby. The park is open daily and is free to enter, but the museums do charge for admission.
