This church has a fascinating history with relics from the battles of Pisa’s knights and architecture by the renowned Giorgio Vasari.

The Church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri is one of Pisa’s most impressive historical monuments. It was built when the Order of the Knights of St. Stephen was established. Today, with its ornate white marble exterior, it is one of the most picturesque buildings in Pisa.

Giorgio Vasari is largely credited with the architectural design of this building, the Knight’s Square and the Palazzo dei Cavalieri. However, the illegitimate son of the first Duke of Tuscany designed the exterior of the church. Inside, the atmosphere is more like a military museum than a place of worship. This is largely due to the display of military banners, which were taken from Saracen pirates, and other relics related to history and war rather than religion.

The main feature of the church is its painted ceiling. Admire the wooden panels with their frescoes, which are surrounded by blue-and-gold stucco sculptures. The frescoes depict six events from the order’s military history, including artist Jacopo da Empol’s Victory in the Greek Archipelago.

Walk along the nave to the 18th-century altar that features two depictions of St. Stephen. One is a statue with a head relief on a bronze stone depicting the saint after he was decapitated. There is also an intricate sculpture by renowned artist Giovanni Battista Foggini.

Visit when a ceremonial service is in progress, as you are likely to hear the deep sounds of the organ. Take the time to sit down and listen to the songs resonate within the historic walls. There are three organs in the church but only one is in use today.

The Church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri is situated in the Santa Maria district on Pisa’s Knights’ Square. It is easily accessible from the city centre on foot or by bus. Metered parking is available but can be difficult to find. The church is open daily. There is a modest admission fee to enter.
