With the Leaning Tower of Pisa as its centrepiece and a host of other impressive buildings, this is the most photographed square in the city.

With spacious manicured lawns, surrounding ancient walls, one of Europe’s most renowned towers and an impressive collection of medieval art, the Piazza dei Miracoli is home to some of Italy’s most popular attractions. Take a camera and climb the Leaning Tower. Then, see the cathedral and walk through the cloisters and cemetery.

The buildings within the Piazza dei Miracoli were built between the 11th and 15th centuries and were listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1987. Stand in the square to look around at some of the most revered attractions in Italy.

Three buildings dominate the square: the Duomo, the Leaning Tower and the Pisa Baptistry. They stand on a cordoned-off area, which allows visitors to view these impressive buildings even when the square is packed.

On the northern wall of the piazza is a fourth site, the sacred Camposanto. Stroll through this cemetery for a break from the crowds of the square.

Enjoy exploring the interiors of the different buildings in the piazza. Climb the spiral staircase to the top of the Leaning Tower and look out over Pisa. Admire the mosaics, historic paintings and frescoes in the Duomo. When standing in the square, notice the colours of the white marble-faced Duomo and the freestanding clock contrasted against the stone-coloured walls of the square and the green grass of the lawns. Be sure to come back in the evening when floodlights illuminate the buildings and create a picturesque evening scene.

The Piazza dei Miracoli is open daily. It’s situated on the border of Pisa’s historic centre. The square is easily accessible from most attractions on foot. Come by bus from outside the city centre. There is parking available for a fee a short walk away on the Via Pietrasantina.

Admission to the square is free, however, there are entrance fees to the monuments and museums. There are various admission price levels including a multi-attraction ticket, which gives you the option to explore the interiors of several of the buildings.
