Palazzo della Carovana

The liveliest building on the Piazza dei Cavalieri was once the centre of Pisa’s order of knights and is now home to one of Italy’s most prestigious universities.

The Palazzo della Carovana is one of the most distinguished pieces of architecture and is the former headquarters of Pisa’s knights. It was designed by famous architect Giorgio Vasari and built between 1562 and 1564. The building overlooks the second-largest square in Pisa. Take a walking tour and admire this incredible piece of architecture.

The palace is an impressive example of Renaissance architecture. It was named after “la Carovana”, the training knights underwent within its walls. While the building is still a centre for education, it is now used for very different purposes. Today it is home to the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, one of the most prestigious universities in Italy.

A great way to discover the history of the knights who lived and studied in the palace is through a walking tour of the old city. Choose from a host of operators that are spread throughout the city. Learn about the architecture of Giorgio Vasari and how he contributed to revitalising Knights’ Square.

An impressive statue of Cosimo 1, the first Duke of Tuscany, is just outside the palace. Take a close look at the palace’s exterior and note the detailed sculptures carved in the façade. They depict the Medici grand dukes. See other details that include famous Italian figures and the symbols from the zodiac.

Because the Palazzo della Carovana is home to a university that is in operation, only certain parts of the building are accessible. Ascend the twin staircases to the main entrance then walk through the historic halls. Even though the building has been renovated to accommodate the university, 16th-century paintings can still be seen in some of the halls.

Situated in Knight’s Square in the Santa Maria quarter, the Palazzo della Carovana is in the heart of Pisa’s historic district. It is easily accessible on foot or by bus from most other major attractions. While parking in the historic quarter is notoriously difficult to find, there is some metered parking nearby.

The square is open daily and there is no admission fee to visit it or the palace.
