An autumn day at Big Bend National Park in West Texas, USA. The unique landscapes in West Texas are incredible to see! The natural landmarks there aren't as well known as the ones in Arizona and Utah but they are still epic, desolate and isolated! I'm from Texas but on the other side of Texas. It thus took about 9 or 10 hours to drive from Houston. I'm glad it was my father who drove ;). Because the scenery outside the window was incredible for the last few hours of the drive. And once inside the national park then it was even more awesome!
I took this photo in early December 2015.

The Rio Grande River winds 12 miles down Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park, Texas. When the water is high you can come down the 1,500 foot walled canyon. With less water flowing, guides take you 3 to 4 miles up the canyon with some spots having to portage. But take it all in stride because the views are breathtaking. I recommend Big Bend River Tours. You might get lucky and have the guides that take you a half mile up a side canyon. An excellent day excursion in the out of the way national park.

To get to this extremely remote low pool called the Ernst Tinaja, you have to drive a high-clearance or 4WD vehicle on Old Ore Road in Big Bend National Park and hike about a mile. It was sweltering in April but so worth it to see the pink and orange flaky layers of rock laid down by eons of a shallow inland sea. The pool is a scary toxic green, and with its steep sides is a death trap to creatures other than birds or insects.
