When master gardener Beth Chatto designed these spectacular arrangements she included plants from a variety of habitats around the world.

Visit the Beth Chatto Gardens to see years of hard work that have culminated in a majestic garden. Walk around to discover the contrasts between the dry Gravel Garden and the rich tones of the Water Garden. See the bursts of colour in the Woodland Garden each spring and autumn and stand in wonder at the Scree Garden. Afterwards, take a break at the tearoom or take some plants home from the nursery.

When Beth Chatto, a local gardening expert and author, began planning her gardens in the 1960s she was told her family’s land was unsuitable for gardening. Almost half a century later Beth’s 3 hectares (7 acres) have proved that picturesque gardens can flourish even when the conditions aren’t perfect.

Begin your visit with a stroll through the Gravel Garden to see the contours and sculptural shapes of a dry habitat, and the colourful species that flourish within. Afterwards, make your way to the sloping Scree Garden to see delicate flowers surviving on the rocky hill face. Take the Long Shady Walk to see plants that can make do with very little light before arriving at the Water Garden, complete with a variety of lilies growing on the four ponds. In spring you’ll find bluebells, snowdrops and crocuses flourishing in the Woodland Garden.

After you’ve explored the gardens, stop by the tearoom that overlooks the gardens for a homemade cake and a warm beverage. Check the gardens website for information about workshops in the tearoom. Pick up seedlings and potted plants from the nursery to begin work on your own garden.

Located just 7 kilometers (4 miles) from Colchester, the Beth Chatto Gardens can be reached by bus from the city centre or by car. Free parking is available on site. While the Gravel Garden is free to enter, the rest of Beth’s gardens are subject to a small admission fee but are open daily except for the Christmas break.
