Covering several blocks in the heart of Memphis, Beale Street is the city’s centre for music, history and entertainment. Over the years, this historic strip has played host to music legends such as B.B. King, Johnny Cash, Louis Armstrong and Elvis Presley, who helped to develop the style of music known as the “Memphis Blues”.
Learn about decades of music history with a visit to the Memphis Rock N’ Soul Museum. This museum, created by the Smithsonian Institute, is dedicated to showcasing the stories of artists who helped to start and to shape the rock and soul genres.
Stop by the Hard Rock Café for a meal and a drink. The restaurant, which is housed in a former recording studio, is a rock ‘n’ roll movement time capsule. Of special note, amongst the plethora of collectables, is the restaurant’s Elvis memorabilia, which is on the first floor. This collection will give you a glimpse into the life of The King even if you don’t have time to go to Graceland.
Pick up some souvenirs at A. Schwab Dry Goods Store. Founded in 1876, A. Schwab’s has been serving the area for centuries and is Beale Street’s oldest store. Peruse the wide variety of merchandise on the shelves, which includes everything from trinkets to household goods. Afterwards, get a bite to eat at Dyer’s Burgers. This famous restaurant has been satisfying hungry patrons since 1912.
In addition to Beale Street’s rich musical history, it has an excellent contemporary music scene. Step into one of the small nightclubs that line the street to hear talented artists in an intimate setting.
Stroll under the glow of neon lights along the length of Beale Street and take in numerous historic landmarks and modern music venues. The iconic street ends at Tom Lee Park, which is located on the banks of the Mississippi. This idyllic community park is the perfect place to relax after exploring the area.
The Beale Street Music Festival, a large music festival boasting some of the most famous contemporary musical acts, is held in the park every May.
Beale Street runs through Downtown Memphis and due to its central location it is a gateway to many other destinations in the city.
