Amazing inn, I have never stayed anywhere so friendly, unique, clean and caring
Characterful, historic inn with lots of interesting features and set in beautiful countryside South of Bath. Well-renovated, comfortable and quiet bedrooms. It has the potential to be a four-star gem. Unfortunately that wasn't our experience.
We arrived and struggled to find Reception: signs for this pointed to a busy bar. Nobody greeted us or gave directions; the check-in point turned out to be in a dining room and several staff passed by but we were kept waiting. The bed was comfortable and the bed room was well-renovated, but small with a tiny bathroom and cramped shower cubicle. The breakfast menu looked excellent as others have reported, but delivery did not match expectations while the service was gruff and rude. Staff pushed past us into the dining room. Muzak was piped through the speakers. Supposedly "flat white" coffee was weak and tasteless. Fruit juice appeared to be out of a cheap supermarket carton. Eggs Benedict came on stale untoasted muffins, shakshuka was watery and served with overcooked eggs; a question about the preparation time was brushed off because "you're not in a rush". When requesting water, one tiny glass was brought for one of us but not the other; when asking for bread, no honey was available and we had to choose either jam or marmalade.
Magical. Almost flawless! We had a great time - the rooms were great, clean, old but modern if that makes sense. Water pressure was great for showers which I wasn't expecting! Food was amazing as well - the venison was so tender, the breakfasts were fantastic and the staff were very accommodating and friendly. Lola especially was exceptionally helpful and friendly. We will definitely be staying here on our next trip to Bath. Really I was surprised at how good the stay was.
We stayed for one night in August in the main building Coombe/King Charles room up the wobbly stairs! What a lovely room, all beams & low doors - very historic. We slept like logs - the bed was very comfortable! It was lovely to stay in such an beautiful building and room. We had a lovely evening dinner there & a fabulous breakfast. Overall very good value for money. The location was quiet and we enjoyed a walk around the lovely village the next morning before leaving.
