In all my years of travel, I had never had a situation like this happen...
A couple of hours after checkout I got a email from the hotel with an invoice for a significant amount of money with the description "chair" with no further explanation.
I immediately wrote back, but it took them hours to respond stating we stained one of the chairs in the room and that they would replace it at our cost.
We cannot identify what could have caused the stain, since we didn't eat nor drink in the room, and definitely didn't engage in rockstar behavior.
I insisted on trying to find a solution, but they simply responded they were unable to clean and will charge me a new chair.
I feel violated by this charge. We cannot identify what could have caused the stain and cannot believe a big hotel such as the Marriott was unable to remove it. I also feel some of this normal wear is part of doing business, specially for a hotel with such high rates.
Either way, unless you like your card held hostage by unilateral decisions with horrible communication skills, DO NOT STAY HERE!
