Be part of Maastricht’s café culture at this delightful town square, the largest in Maastricht and home to storied cathedrals, an elegant theatre and the city’s annual carnival.

No trip to Maastricht is complete without a visit to the Vrijthof, the city’s largest square and certainly one of its most picturesque. This lovely, tree-lined square is paved with cobblestones and ringed with a mixture of grand historical monuments and stylish houses. Visit one of the city’s remarkable churches, catch a show at the Vrijthof Theatre, or simply sit back and watch the world go by from a café table.

Head to the St. Servaas Church to see a truly impressive basilica, which merges Gothic and Romanesque styles. A church has stood at this site ever since St. Servaas was buried here in the fourth century. Follow the pilgrims to the basilica’s crypt to see the saint’s burying place and learn about his life story through the relics and decorations in its Treasury.

Continue on to the nearby St. Janskerk (Church of St. John), a large Gothic-style cathedral dating back to the 13th century. Look out for the church’s historic pipe organ, then head up to the top of its iconic red tower to enjoy some of the best views available in Maastricht. Note that you may only climb the tower in the summer months.

Stop by the elegant Vrijthof Theatre, home to a range of events throughout the year. Take a moment to appreciate the theatre’s gorgeous neoclassical façade. Come back in the evening to attend a performance.

Recharge after a day’s sightseeing at one of the many cafés on the Vrijthof. Whether you opt for coffee and apple pie or beer and savoury snacks, there is something deeply pleasant about sitting back in the picturesque square and watching the world go past your table.

The Vrijthof is also host to a variety of regular cultural events. During summer, the square holds a series of outdoor classical music concerts. If you happen to visit at the beginning of Lent, you can join in the Maastricht Carnival, when thousands of costumed people descend on the square to watch the hoisting of a giant mascot.
