This grand Romanesque church is home to some breath-taking architecture, an underground chamber of glittering artefacts, and a Virgin Mary statue that has attracted pilgrims for centuries.

Maastricht’s awe-inspiring Basilica of Our Lady (Onze Lieve Vrouwebasiliek) is a deeply historical attraction. Pay a visit to this dark, enchanting place, parts of which are over a thousand years old. The basilica is renowned for being home to the Star of the Sea chapel, where a wooden statue of Mary has drawn pilgrims from all over Europe over the course of many centuries. Admire the church’s mighty façade, explore its interior and look upon the splendid artefacts on display in the basilica’s Treasury.

The majority of the Basilica of Our Lady was constructed during the 11th and 12th centuries, but many believe that the site’s sacred history dates back even further.

As you enter the basilica’s main chamber, take a moment to appreciate the evocative atmosphere of this storied place of worship. Seek out the altar, the crypts and the choirs. The walls of the basilica are lined with interesting murals, including notable images of St. Christopher and St. Catherine. Keep an eye out for the large sculpture in which some 20 Old Testament scenes are depicted.

Descend into the basilica’s Treasury to see a glittering collection of treasures, ranging from ivory chests to religious artefacts made from silver and gold. You can also see robes that had previously been worn by old saints.

The basilica’s main attraction, however, is the Star of the Sea chapel. This side chapel is home to a wooden statue of Our Lady, Star of the Sea, an ancient name for the Virgin Mary. Many miracles have been attributed to the statue over the years, and it has been a destination for pilgrims since as far back as the 17th century.

The Basilica of Our Lady is located in the historical center of Maastricht, easy walking distance from the city centre and close to numerous bus stops. The basilica is free to enter and it is open every day. Finish your visit with a drink and a snack at a café terrace on the square around the basilica, which offers lovely views of the building’s great façade.
