Find out about France’s rich naval past at the Musée National de la Marine. Examine its collection of model ships and view historical artifacts such as rudders and carved wooden figureheads.
Stroll through the marina and relish the picturesque scenery that includes the surrounding hills and numerous sailing boats. Bring your camera for lots of great photo opportunities. Stop for refreshments at one of the waterside cafés or restaurants.
Admire the Génie de la Navigation statue that was erected 1847. The sculpture faces the sea and represents the spirit of marine conquest and exploration. Locals also know it as Cuverville which translates as backside or “ass to town,” because the figure is showing its rear to the city.
Embark on a boat tour of the marina and the neighboring naval port which is the principal base of the French Navy’s Mediterranean fleet. See the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, the marine cemetery and the fortifications around the harbour. Take a trip to the nearby Island of Port-Cros aboard the Bateliers de la Cote d’Azur. The island is known for its walking trails and marine and bird sanctuaries. Other boat trips from the marina travel to the Gold Islands and Saint-Tropez.
Toulon Marina is a short walk from the city centre and a 5-minute taxi ride from the train station. Parking is prohibited, but there is a metered parking lot near the Mayol Shopping Centre, a 3-minute walk from the marina. While you are in the area, visit some of its other attractions. These include Amiral Orosco Garden and the mid-19th-century Church of Saint Louis.
