Tom McCall Waterfront Park Tours and Activities

Known to locals simply as Waterfront Park, the Tom McCall Waterfront Park is a favourite among the people of Portland. It offers plenty of green space to share, and is regularly frequented by walkers, cyclists, skaters and people who are just looking to unwind and have a picnic.Situated on the banks of the Willamette River, the park is particularly popular in summer. Check out Salmon Street Springs, a wonderful fountain which consists of 185 spouts, offering plenty of room for everyone to cool down in the heat.Open on the weekends, the Market Pavilion offers high-quality, locally made arts and crafts, along with an enjoyable atmosphere as you wander around. Operating since 1974, this is the longest-running market of its kind in the United States. Once you have finished with the craft stalls, grab a bite to eat at the food court, which offers North American food, Asian cuisine and lots more besides. The market operates from March until December.Take in some local history as you stroll around – look out for the monument to the Battleship Oregon, an American naval ship which was built at the end of the 19th century. Learn about some wartime history at the Japanese American History Plaza, which commemorates prisoners of war held inland during the Second World War.Tom McCall Waterfront Park is at its best during its many festivals which take place throughout the year. July is a particularly busy month, with the soulful sounds of the Waterfront Blues Festival followed by the Oregon Brewers Festival. This is the perfect opportunity to enjoy some of the many locally produced beers for which Portland is famous. The Bite of Oregon festival takes place in August and celebrates the very finest in Oregon cuisine, while the Gay and Lesbian Pride Festival brings an outrageous riot of colour to the park in November.
