Learn about the subtle art of bonsai and the intricate development of the subway in this fascinating coastal hub in eastern Tokyo.

On the eastern side of Tokyo, Edogawa is an exciting ward full of museums, gardens and towers. The leafy district has a range of parks that have waterside views and are also well prepared for potential natural disasters. Split your time between scenic green spaces and informative institutions.

Among the most intriguing attractions is the Tokyo Metro Museum, which gives insights into the history of the city’s underground transportation system. Climb inside the restored boxcar train in the replica of a train station within the museum.

Another institution that celebrates the local culture is the Shunkaen Bonsai Museum. Learn to craft the miniature trees and study the range of impressive models. If you have the time, do a month-long course under the guidance of the site’s master bonsai cultivator.

Explore the scenic side of the ward, with a trip to Tokyo Sea Life Park in the southern cape. Bring your family to see the penguins, puffins and sharks and appreciate the elegant architectural touches of this open-air aquarium.

Delve further into Edogawa’s greenery at Ukita Park, which has sports fields, floral displays and an animal park. You can also wander along the woodland trails of Ojima Komatsugawa Park.

For a view of the ward’s impressive sights from above, ride the elevator to the observation deck of the Tower Hall Funabori. The building has a movie theatre, restaurants and shops. Admire the vista of the twin rivers of Arakawa and Naka in the foreground, with the electrifying skyline of central Tokyo rising beyond them.

The district is in the eastern region of Tokyo. Drive east from the city centre for 12 miles (19 kilometres) or take the Toei Shinjuku and Tozai metro lines to reach Edogawa. While you’re in the ward, make sure to visit the adjacent areas of Ichikawa and Koto.

Edogawa is a green coastal haven with a wonderful bonsai garden.
