The Nordkette Cable Car proves just how close Austria’s cities are to their Alpine surroundings – in just twenty minutes, you can be whisked away from the bustling centre of Innsbruck to the peace and quiet of the towering peaks, almost two thousand metres above.
The cable car from Innsbruck up the Nordkette was originally built in 1928, but recently underwent a makeover by award-winning architect Dame Zaha Hadid. She not only created a sleek design for the carriage, but also rebuilt two of the three stations in a shape inspired by the surrounding clouds.
The Nordkette Cable Car journey begins with the Hungerburgbahn rail link from the Congress not far from Innsbruck’s Old Town. In just 8 minutes, you’ll reach the terminus at Hungerburg, which sits 300 metres above the city and approximately 860 metres above sea level. There are many walks from this lower station, as well as viewing points and even a restaurant and café from which you can enjoy the bustling town beneath you in alpine peace and quiet.
Change to the cable car proper from here and soar up 1,000 metres to the Seegrube station. In good weather, it is even possible to see across to Austria’s border with Italy. Seegrube offers great skiing facilities in weather, with the powdery snow and gentle slopes making it perfect for youngsters and beginners. If you visit in summer, check out the walking trails across the slopes.
When you’re ready to move on, Hafelekar is the final stop, at 2,255 metres above sea level. Skiing is possible here, but the altitude and gradient of the slope make it only suitable for very experienced skiers with the right equipment. In summer, you can reach the peak of the Hafelakarspitze in 10-15 minutes, or discover one of the longer panoramic paths, with views out over the Karwendel Alpine Park providing an interesting contrast to the busy Inn valley. Keen climbers can try out the fixed ropes route to the top, although proper equipment and a good head for heights are a must.
Nordkette Cable Car runs throughout the day, every day. Ticket prices vary depending on how far up you wish to travel. Free parking is available near the lowest station. Ski and mountaineering equipment can be hired from outlets in Innsbruck.
