The Museum of Modern Art (MAM) is São Paulo’s leading collection of 20th-century art. The museum is modelled on the New York museum of the same name and is situated in the lush greenery of Ibirapuera Park. See a small but important selection of artwork by the European Masters as well as a wonderful collection of work by local and international Latin American artists. More than 4,000 artworks are on show in this museum, including works by noted artists such as Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso and Alfredo Volpi.
The museum was built in 1948 and was one of the first of its kind in South America. The building’s industrial architecture contrasts with the leafy surroundings. Pose in front of the building for a photograph. The museum has maintained its importance as a key cultural destination in the city for many decades. Wander through its sculpture garden under the Ibirapuera Park trees. There are 30 sculptures dotted over the museum’s grounds, including wooden sculptures by Carlos Fajardo. Don’t miss the impressive steel work by Amílcar De Castro.
Explore the museum’s interior to see its fascinating permanent collection. See key works by Pablo Picasso and João Almino. Enter the glass gallery dedicated to the large spidery sculptures by Louise Bourgeois. The sculptures are illuminated by natural light and provide another great photo opportunity.
Relax with a snack and drinks at the museum’s restaurant. Take a seat by the large windows around the restaurant to enjoy views of the sculpture garden. Try pastel pastries and hot coffee for a local treat. Get to the restaurant around midday to try the buffet lunch.
Find the Museum of Modern Art inside Ibirapuera Park, which can be easily reached by metro and bus. The museum’s parking area can be used for a fee. MAM is closed on Mondays. Enjoy free admission on Sundays or pay an entrance fee every other day.
