Spend a couple of hours monkeying around at this charming little zoo, which has a special relationship with these fascinating primates.

Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park first opened its doors to visitors in 1952 and today, still upholds the promise made to its benefactor, Joseph Prentice back in 1949 to keep at least 50 monkeys here at any time.

The obligatory primates include rare and endangered species, such as the crested capuchin and the world’s smallest monkey, the pygmy marmoset. The zoo is also home to more than 80 species of animals, with a particular emphasis on Central and South American wildlife.

This relatively small zoo is spread across an 8 hectare site, perfect for children as the whole site takes around two to three hours to get around and there’s plenty to keep them amused along the way.

Wander among the fascinating South American birds in the 840-square-metre aviary. Admire the brilliant plumage of birds such as the colourful emerald toucanet and scarlet ibis. The Pampas Grasslands (Tierra de las Pampas) simulate the highly endangered South American habitat and is home to anteaters, guanacos and rheas. Stay for a while and watch these fascinating creatures going about their business.

Amazon’s Edge simulates the jungles of Brazil, home to exotic creatures like the elegant black-necked swan, huge goliath bird-eating tarantula and sociable black howler monkey.

Smaller children can get the chance to touch and feed many familiar farmyard animals in the fenced off petting area at the Crean Family Farm

Children will love a ride on the zoo’s Conservation Carousel ride, with its brightly coloured replicas of 33 endangered animals. They can sit on a giant panda, giraffe, cheetah, a hummingbird or sea otter. If they start to get tired, take them on a trip round the park on the Zoofari train. Both rides charge a small fee. If you are looking for a bite to eat, there’s an on-site café that serves food and drink and don’t forget to pick up a souvenir from the small gift shop.

The Santa Ana Zoo is located about five minutes by car from central Santa Ana. The admission fee is reasonable and parking is free. The zoo is open every day except for Thanksgiving, Christmas day and New Year’s day.
