Rainbow Beach on the Great Sandy Strait in Queensland is one of two access points to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island. Don’t just pass through though; Rainbow Beach is a great tourist destination. The coloured sands that lend their name to the town offer a scenic backdrop to your next beach holiday. The beautiful shores of the Great Sandy Strait are perfect for sailing, fishing, and to spot rare birds and other wildlife. You can hand-feed wild dolphins, go on guided environmental walks, or discover Carlo Sand Blow and Double Island Point Light by four-wheel drive. Mostly, you should relax from the hustle of bustle of city life when you visit Rainbow Beach.
Several resorts offer excellent Rainbow Beach accommodation right at the shore. One resort features direct beach access and luxury apartments, another has a restaurant, coffee shop, and tennis court on the premises. Rainbow Beach may be small, but you can expect comfort on your holiday. Nearby Tin Can Bay offers two motels and more apartment accommodation if you need further options.
Rainbow Beach is located 240 km north of Brisbane. Drive up Motorway 1, then turn into Tin Can Bay Road in Gympie. You can also fly to Hervey Bay Airport (HVB,) 130 km north of Rainbow Beach and travel south on State Route 57 and Cooloola Coast Road. There are several daily public buses from Gympie, which lies on the Greyhound line from Brisbane to Cairns.
