The biggest park in Malmo surrounds a 17th-century lake and water tower and features stunning seasonal flowerbeds and free open-air concerts in summer.

Pildammsparken is a public park with over 45 hectares (111-acres) of space. This park and its tranquil forests, lakes and perennial gardens are popular amongst people looking for some recreational space or a venue for an event.

The park was founded as a venue for the Baltic Exhibition of 1914, an exhibition that showcased the industry and culture from countries that bordered the Baltic Sea. Ferdinand Boberg, a Swedish architect, designed the park.

Begin your park day at Margaret Pavilion. This building is one of the few still remaining from the original Baltic Exhibition, and is named after a former crown princess of Sweden. From the pavilion, wander along Kronprincessan Margaretas Blomstergatan (Flower Street). Landscape architects create stunning themed gardens in spring and summer. One theme was Monet’s painting Water Lilies. Flower Street leads into a rose garden dedicated to Queen Silvia of Sweden.

Visit the Pildammstornet, a 100-year-old tower on the east side of a wide lake. This early-1900s water tower is now the home of the Pildammstornet Galleri. See temporary and travelling exhibitions of artwork by local and international artists here. Sound and light displays will entertain the younger visitors. In the summer, the lake comes alive to classical music while cascades of water come from three lit fountains.

Come to the park between June and August to enjoy a summer event outdoors. Many events occur at the Pildammsteatern amphitheatre and the Tallriken, a large circle-shaped lawn surrounded by trees. Sit and listen or kick up your heels on the grass to jazz, reggae and rock bands. The performing arts series lasts for two months, so check out what events you’d like to see on the Sommarscen festival website.

Pildammsparken is situated in the Kronoborg district, approximately 25 minutes’ walk from Malmo’s city centre. A small car park offers limited free parking for up to four hours in the daytime. Arrive early to get your spot on weekends and public holidays. Bus and train stops are located nearby. The park is free to enter and is open 24 hours a day, year-round.
