Malmo Museum is made up of several museums housed inside the grounds of the oldest remaining Renaissance castle in Sweden, Malmo Castle. The museums are an engaging experience of Malmo’s history and feature exhibits on photography and contemporary Nordic art, the city’s maritime heritage and an aquarium of tropical fish.
The museums and their exhibition halls are compactly and conveniently located inside the castle and along Malmohusvagen Street. Begin in the castle’s main hall and hire out an audio guide for a small extra fee. The audio guide runs for approximately 2 hours and includes the intriguing stories of the kings and queens who lived here. A free guided tour operates on Saturday and Sunday afternoons in summer.
Check out the Malmo Art Museum to see Nordic art that spans from the 16th century until today. Contemporary Scandinavian artists, such as Annika von Hausswolff and Dan Wolgers, are exhibited here.
The Natural History Museum features a wide variety of animal species on display, including a giraffe and 12,000 birds. Pythons and piranhas will be a delight to kids visiting the aquarium.
Visit the Kommendanthuset (Commander’s House) located just outside the castle entrance. See a rotating collection of photography exhibitions at the Room for Photography or learn about Nordic customs at the learning centre. The Technonology and Maritime museum is located nearby. Visitors can climb aboard a real submarine and watch documentaries about Malmo’s maritime history. Learn about the area’s mechanical history from hand-powered machinery to steam, petrol and electric engines.
Malmo Museum is centrally located within walking distance from many of Malmo’s city attractions, such as Kungsparken and Stortorget. Parking is available in front of the castle for a fee. The museum is open daily, except for some holidays. A single ticket price covers entry to the castle and all museums. Admission is free for visitors under the age of 19.
