Swedish summers are lived to the fullest, and Malmo could have started that tradition. The southwest coastal city, known as the “City of Parks”, is famed for its public green spaces, castles, museums, festivals and beaches. The third-biggest city in Sweden was established in the 13th century as Danish crown land, but became a part of Sweden in 1658.
The compact city centre makes it ideal for getting around on foot. Malmo is an especially eco-friendly city and features 470 kilometres (292 miles) of bike paths. Rent a bicycle or explore the major attractions within walking distance of the Old Town. Malmo’s historic civic heart lies in Stortoget, the city’s oldest public square and home to a 16th-century Town Hall. More historic architecture can be found at Gustav Adolf’s Square. Enjoy the fresh Scandinavian air sitting at an outdoor café at Lilla Torg.
Long summer days with 17 hours of daylight are perfect for exploring Malmo's green spaces. Wander around the lush, perennial gardens of the central Kungsparken and Castle Park. A century-old water tower is the landmark for Pildammsparken, a park which features free concerts. Kids will enjoy the petting zoo and exciting rides at Folkets Park. Take in some sunshine at Ribersborg Beach, a 2.4-kilometre (1.5-mile) beach located just 25 minutes’ walk from the centre of the city.
The city’s cultural events programme is filled with open-air concerts and performances that spill out across parks, squares and the waterfront. Almost 500 shows in public spaces occur in the city in a year and many of them are free. The two biggest summer festivals are Sommarscen and the Malmo Festival.
Rent a car and explore the surrounding area. Lund, built on the site of the active 11th-century Lund Cathedral School, is just a 20-minute drive away. Drive or catch the train along the 16-kilometre (10-mile) Oresund Bridge to Copenhagen.Malmo also knows how to cater to the colder months with indoor activities and attractions.
