This huge collection of ancient art from across the world is one of the largest in Northern Europe and is housed in an equally impressive historic building.

The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek houses an incredible collection of ancient art that was once privately owned, and includes pieces that date back some 8,000 years. The building itself, once the city’s fortress, has a fascinating history of its own and this venue is an absolute must for anyone with an interest in art.

The art collection was originally started by Carl Jacobsen. As the son of the founder of world-renowned brewing company Carlsberg, he had the means to start what was to become the largest collection of French paintings, sculpture and ancient art. The collection grew so large that, in an act of extraordinary generosity, he decided to donate it to the city of Copenhagen.

Considered to be one of the most comprehensive collections in Northern Europe, visitors flock here to see the paintings and artefacts that date back as far as 6500 BC. To get the most out of your visit, free guided tours of the gallery are available, which give a real insight into the story behind the various works and artefacts.

The collection of Greek, Roman and Etruscan works contains a large number of ceramics and marble statues. Wander among the huge Egyptian statues, as well as the white marble sarcophagus that was one of Jacobsen’s first acquisitions. The oldest pieces in the collection are to be found in the Near Eastern Collection where artefacts from the ancient civilisations of Levant and Mesopotamia give an insight into those cultures.

There is an equally impressive body of work from Europe, with a particular emphasis on French painting and sculpture and celebrated works from masters such as Éduoard Manet and Edgar Degas. There is also a wonderful collection of world-famous pieces from the sculptor Auguste Rodin.

Situated just outside the city centre, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is easily accessible on foot or by bicycle and can be found next to the Tivoli Gardens. Public transport is available at nearby Copenhagen Central Station and there is limited paid parking available if you are coming by car. Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is open every day except for Mondays and some public holidays. There is a charge for admission.
