"We enjoyed being able to watch the river as we bathed in the open air bath. Plenty of amenities provided, staff was super friendly and helpful, and room was lovely and spacious. Japanese breakfast was huge and delicious and it was wonderful to try some regional specialities."

If looking for authentic Japanese experience (for the working and middle class Japanese) this is a very good experience. Dinner and breakfast buffet was really good. "This ryokan is very dated and in dire need of a refresh. The facilities are not what you would expect from a top end facility in a spa town. The public bath (men’s) felt decades old with soap/salt staining and old fittings. The private baths were a good facility/idea. Most corridors apart from the main lobby area had an unpleasant smell (musty, mouldy). Our room also faintly had this whiff. The staff are great - polite and efficient. Breakfast was good. The free snacks, sale, ice cream buffets were a good idea but don’t expect them to be top quality. The shuttle was handy. And the ryokan is well situated, a short walk away from charming Yamanaka town. Unfortunately I could not recommend this as a place until it has had a make-over. "
