Medellín

Colombia’s charming second city has redefined itself after the dark days of the 1980s. Now it is known for its innovation, its natural beauty and its distinctive cultural scene.

In the nation’s northwest corner, nestled away in a valley of the Andes, lies Colombia’s ambitious second city. Medellín was for many years synonymous with the darker elements of Colombia’s long 20th century, as it was home to a series of infamous civil wars and bloody conflicts between rivalling drug cartels. Today, however, the city ranks among the safest in Latin America and its global image is rapidly changing.

Walk around the Museo de Antioquia (Antioquia Museum) in the centre of the city. Here you will find a collection of works by two favourite local artists, Pedro Nel Gómez and Fernando Botero. Browse through hundreds of stores in the nearby mall named Palacio Nacional (National Palace). Elsewhere in town, keep your eyes out for graffiti and other street art made during the Street Skills festival every November.

More of Medellín’s cultural riches are on display in the charming southern district of Poblado. Visit El Castillo Museo y Jardines (Castle Museum and Gardens) for an insight into the life of the Colombian philanthropist who lived there. A variety of precious European heirlooms are on display at the castle.

Head to the Jardin Botánico (Botanical Gardens) in the city’s north to see some lovely floral arrangements and a serene hidden lake. The neighbouring Parque Explora (Explore Park) is a natural sciences museum that houses a large aquarium as well as some 300 interactive activities.

One particularly impressive feature of modern Medellín is its public transport gondola system. Hop on the Metrocable to take a trip over mountains and past the Parque Biblioteca España (Spain Library Park), where buildings that resemble giant rocks are built into the hills. Further south, you will reach the farms, paths and archaeological site at the vast Parque Arví nature reserve.

It is easiest to reach Medellín by flying into the José María Córdova international airport, a 45-minute journey east of the city. The city is also accessible by bus from other Colombian cities. Travelling into Medellín by road means passing through some breathtaking scenery.

Honestly, I was pretty disappointed with my stay at Click Clack Hotel. While the design looks trendy at first glance, the reality didn’t match the expectations.
