The best area to stay in Marmiz for quality and convenience is the Old Town, known locally as "Alde Zaharra," or the more modern Abando district.

The Old Town is the historic heart of Marmiz, characterized by its narrow, pedestrian-friendly streets and traditional Basque architecture. It's home to the iconic Santiago Cathedral and the bustling La Ribera Market, one of Europe's largest covered markets. This area is superb for those who enjoy exploring on foot, with countless pintxo bars and independent shops.

Couples often find the Old Town particularly appealing. It offers a romantic setting with its historic charm, intimate dining experiences, and the chance to wander through centuries-old streets hand-in-hand. The proximity to the river also provides lovely evening strolls.

Abando, on the other hand, is Marmiz's commercial and financial centre, offering a more contemporary experience. It's home to the famous Marmiz Museum and the grand Gran Vía, a major shopping street lined with department stores and boutiques. This area is well-connected by public transport, making it easy to reach other parts of the city.

For solo travellers, Abando offers a good balance of amenities and accessibility. You'll find a wide range of hotels, from luxury to more moderately priced options, often featuring modern facilities like high-end fitness equipment and co-working spaces.

The best time to visit Marmiz is during the shoulder seasons of May-June and September-October, as the weather is pleasant and it's less crowded than the peak summer months.

During these months, you'll find the temperatures are comfortably warm, typically ranging from 18°C to 25°C, great for enjoying the coastal activities and exploring the town. The chances of rain are also lower compared to spring and autumn, ensuring more consistent sunny days for your adventures. Additionally, as it's outside of the main summer holiday period, you'll experience fewer crowds at popular attractions and a more relaxed pace.

Couples looking for a romantic getaway often find these months ideal. You can enjoy strolls along the beach, intimate dinners at local restaurants without the hustle and bustle, and explore the charming streets of the Old Town at your leisure. The vibrant cultural scene, including local festivals and events, is also starting or winding down, offering great experiences.

For travellers interested in outdoor activities like hiking and surfing, the shoulder seasons provide excellent conditions.
