Experience the thrill of attending a championship horse-racing event at a museum dedicated to one of the Triple Crown races.

The Kentucky Derby, one of America’s oldest, continuous sporting events, has been held at Louisville’s Churchill Downs Racetrack since 1875. The museum located by the track is appropriate in recognizing this annual occurrence.

Volunteers whose love for the race is clearly shown by their enthusiasm staff the non-profit center. The museum opened in 1985 after the racetrack donated land, with support provided by the J. Graham Brown Foundation and local financial institutions. A complete renovation in 2010 significantly increased its importance as a record-keeper and promoter of this hugely popular racing event that occurs every May. Enjoy its informative and entertaining displays.

Walk through the museum’s two floors to view permanent and temporary exhibits that include items from races dating back to the 1840s. Get a picture taken in a replica of the Winner’s Circle with a life-size model of a recent winning horse and jockey. Learn about the 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. Imagine the pageantry, which is a large part of the derby. Notice the whimsically designed displayed hats that have been worn by dignitaries and celebrities.

The museum offers many opportunities to be engaged. Watch younger visitors racing their friends in a simulated Kentucky Derby. Climb on a replica horse while you’re wearing jockey gear and have your picture taken as if you’re waiting for the starting gate to open.

Discover details of the breeding and training programs for a thoroughbred horse leading up to its third year when it competes in the derby. Find out if you have the announcing skill to call a race by recording your voice.

Kentucky Derby Museum is open most days except Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks days and select holidays. Find the museum at Gate 1 of Churchill Downs. Purchase admission online or at the museum. The entrance fee includes a tour of Churchill Downs, a heart-pounding film of the enthralling race and access to the gift shop and café.
