This soaring skyscraper at the heart of Shanghai’s financial district offers fine dining and entertainment, as well as amazing views across the bustling city.

The Jin Mao Tower is a prominent landmark on the Pudong skyline, rising to a height of almost 420 metres. Built in the late 1990s, it houses modern office space, a luxury five-star hotel as well as many restaurants, exhibition halls and entertainment facilities, including a top-floor observation deck, where you will be treated to breathtaking views of the city below.

As with many of Shanghai’s famous buildings, the Jin Mao Tower effectively combines tradition and modernity. Whilst it is reputed to be the most technologically advanced skyscraper, capable of withstanding earthquakes and typhoons, at the heart of its design is the culturally significant number 8, said to bring prosperity. The 88 floors are grouped into 16 segments, and the official dedication of the building was made on the 28th August 1998.

To access the Skywalk observation deck, you’ll need to head down to the basement level where the ticket office is situated. From there, jump into the high-speed lift that travels at an amazing 9.1 metres per second. It only takes 45 seconds to reach the 88th floor, so you’ll be there before you know it! As you step out into the viewing area, you’ll be greeted with a panoramic vista of the city and surrounding area.

Head back down through the building to the Grand Hyatt Shanghai Hotel, which occupies 34 floors. Admire the sweeping spiral lines of the vast barrel-vaulted atrium extending from the 56th floor to the 87th. For dinner in style, try one of the gourmet restaurants in this complex, serving dishes from Shanghai and Canton, as well as from further afield.

Back down at ground level, you’ll find the Jin Mao Concert Hall, a 395-seat auditorium offering chamber music, jazz and modern drama performances, and the Jin Mao Fashion and Recreation Center, home to luxury fashion boutiques and spas.

The Jin Mao Tower is open every day until late into the evening. It is located in the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone in Pudong. The nearest metro station is Lujiazui.
