Peruse paintings by Swedish masters such as Munch and Larson alongside works by Rubens and Rembrandt in Gothenburg’s largest art museum.

Browse the collection at the Gothenburg Museum of Art (Göteborgs Konstmuseum) to see a large collection of works by Swedish masters, many of them former local residents. You’ll also find works dating back to the 15th century by world-famous painters from mainland Europe. Don’t miss the temporary exhibitions, which often focus on contemporary Swedish art.

Before entering the museum, admire the high arches and distinct yellow colour of the façade. This neoclassical building was constructed in 1923 to celebrate the city’s 300th anniversary. Once inside, explore six floors of artworks.

Paintings from the early 1800s make up a large part of the collection. Notice landscapes and portraits that give a glimpse into the lives of peasants in the Gothenburg fields and into the city’s middle-class homes more than 200 years ago.

Look for canvases by famous Nordic artists such as Munch and Larson in the Furstenburg Gallery. Most of the works here originate from the early 19th century. The bold lines and vivid colors of the paintings by Gothenburg colourists show how local artists reacted to the works of Van Gogh and his contemporaries.

Browse the six rooms that house the European Art collection, which feature works predominantly from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Look for Rembrandt’s The Knight with the Falcon and Rubens’ The Adoration of the Magi, plus works by Monet and Picasso.

Take a free guided tour in English to learn more about the history and importance of the paintings in the museum.
