For a refreshing stroll along the water's edge, why not visit the revitalised riverside district of Dusseldorf Hafen. Formerly an important centre of international trade, the harbour area fell into disrepair at the beginning of the twentieth century. Its fortunes were turned around on the eve of the new millennium, when investors from the media industry chose the glittering waterside location as their base.
In the last few decades, Medienhafen – as the area is also known – has played home to broadcasting giants such as CNN and the local network Westdeutscher Rundfunk. Take a guided tour to learn more about the history of the area and see some of its post-modern landmarks.
Many of the buildings here were designed by famous contemporary architects, including the clean lines of David Chipperfield’s buildings and Frank Gehry’s experimental creations. Gehry’s twisted masterpiece Der Neue Zollhof is perhaps the most striking of all, its leaning towers and eye-catching exteriors making it an arresting part of the harbour landscape.
The harbour has attracted a host of fine restaurants serving some of the best cuisine in Dusseldorf. Celebrate this gastronomic tradition by booking on to the Gastro-Rally tour to enjoy tasting sessions at the best restaurants in the area.
For food with a view, the revolving restaurant at the top of the Rhine Tower is the ideal place to enjoy dinner. Its large windows allow you to see the city from different perspectives while you dine. After dinner, head up to the observation deck for panoramic views across the whole of Dusseldorf.
There are plenty of other dining options as well. Why not treat yourself to the Michelin-starred menu of Berens am Kai. In fact, there are restaurants along the length of Kaistrasse catering for all tastes and budgets.
The easiest way to reach the Hafen is to stroll south along the Rhine Promenade, which links the area to the Altstadt. It takes thirty minutes or so from the city centre on foot. There is pay and display parking nearby for drivers, and buses, trams and underground trains all stop nearby.
