Love the pub & food was great. Rooms are nice for the price too, but the rooms could use some new pillows as ours were very old & had to fold them in half. Overall it was a good stay ☺️

The home of Red Dog. As we are travelling with a dog, we were made to feel very welcome. The pub is lively and great food. The rooms are a bit 1960's, but clean, safe and friendly staff.

Thank you for your feedback, Kamran. Our cheaper rooms are 19 sqm. Our ocean view rooms are 26sqm. All rooms are cleaned after every guest with all linen washed and remade. We are the second most dusty town in WA after Port Hedland. Because the dust from the Iron Ore blows directly on to Dampier. This does make it very difficult for our cleaning staff.

Booked a buget room ($140) for a 1 night stay. Opened the door and was met with the stench of sewerage and room was full of flys. Bathroom was dirty and didn't want to touch the bed. If I could upload photos, I would. We decided to upgrade to a better room and they charged us another $60 on top of what we had already paid. The sea view room was at least cleaner but still not worth the $200 price tag. The whole property needs a massive overhall. The food was very good but hugely overpriced as they seem to cater for FIFO. When the mining companies are paying, the price is ridiculous. This included alcohol bar prices as well. Unfortunately, I hadn't seen previous reviews for this property. I definitely would not have booked it if I had

We are sorry you had this experience with your room. I wish a manager had been notified of your issue and we would have upgraded or moved to a better room at no extra charge. There is NO sewage stench as you put it anywhere in the hotel, Is it possible this smell was coming from a bin located near the accommodation building?, again we could have rectified the problem quickly had a manager been notified. As far as pricing goes. We are similarly priced to Karratha on food and beverages. We are less expensive than most accommodation in Karratha. You could have paid 500 per night in Karratha, but it sounds like you would not be happy doing that either. We make no apologies for our very reasonable pricing in comparison to the area we operate in. Every business in the Pilbara caters for workers and FIFO, They make up 80 to 90 percent of our business. Tourists make up 10 to 20 percent of our business. We pay our staff higher wages and our fixed running costs are 25% higher than that in the City. The Mermaid is the oldest venue in Karratha and Dampier. Its rooms were refurbished in 2013. It is an unpretentious yet friendly venue with good food and service. For the price our accommodation represents Good value in the Pilbara.

Thank you for your feedback, Robin. We often get comments that we are quieter than staying in Karratha. Our rooms are double brick, cyclone rated with secure self-locking doors when closed, so I'm not sure what you are referring to there. The Mermaid is the oldest hotel in the Karratha and Dampier area. Its rooms were fully refurbished in 2013 to a modern standard. All toilets are clean and functional. Our accommodation GOOD value in the Pilbara. If reception staff were genuinely not interested, then this is a first, i hope you could give me a call and let me know what you experienced so we can improve.

Pub next door was good. The surrounds were terrible, broken glass and rubbish on footpath, very neglected. Old furniture on deck and in room. No little extras (eg nice sheets, towels, crockery, cutlery) to give value for money. Bathroom ok.

Thankyou for your review. These points have been Looked at this morning. We are adding daily grounds sweeping and cleaning to our housekeeping team as a result. As well as looking at purchasing some replacement furniture to replace some that is not in good condition. We did spend 6000 dollar's on new sheets and towels in May this year. The color choices are suitable for the dusty environment in Dampier as a result of the onshore wind blowing the iron ore dust over thew hotel every day. White sheets are not. Just Don't Go There.
The view was great, but we had to move due to the sheets not being changed between guests. It probably needed a refurbishment a decade ago. Fridge seal was broken so couldn't freeze my ice packs. No microwave, so had to throw food away. I had to put our blanket over the bed for the kids to sleep on and I waited until we got to next hotel to take a shower.

Thankyou for your review. No hotel is perfect, a simple paperwork miscommunication resulted in FOH staff checking you in to a room they expected to be clean, but was not. The perfectly acceptable solution was to move you to another room that was ready. This does not happen often and it is not the end of the world as you have portrayed it. Every room and bathroom at the Mermaid hotel was gutted and renovated over 2012/13 period to a modern standard. The 100l bar fridges in the rooms do not have a dedicated separate freezer so freezing icepacks overnight even with a new one is almost impossible. The rooms are a motel room. Not a self contained apartment and as such, do not have the electrical capacity for microwaves built into them. All linen and blankets are washed and drycleaned after every guest. So putting your own blanket over the top is a tad ridiculous. The bathroom and shower are mopped with bathroom cleaning chemical and shower screens wiped using a CLR vineger and water solution after every guest, but this still leaves some calcium stains due to the very high calcium content in the water in our area. Waiting for the next hotel to take a shower is just absurd as ours are functional and clean. I suggest you book 4 or 5 star hotels in future which are 350 to 600 per night in Karratha so that your unreasonably high expectations can possibly be met.

For the price paid, was good pub accommodation. We were there for a few days and couldn’t hear the noise in our room from the pub. Meals at the pub were good. View from room was terrific, make sure u get an ocean facing room.

Young man at reception was the only friendly & helpful staff member at accommodation. View from room is great. There was no hairdryer, AC was rattling all night, TV is an inconvenient location for couples laying on dble bed.

Very ordinary experience. No cups or mugs in room, no teaspoons. 2 tiny little UHT milks for 2 people…🙄 Had to park on other side of building, meaning all luggage and extras had to be schlepped over to the room. No wifi, no volume on movie channel, air conditioner blows in direction away from bed. For $199 per night, you’d think some of the basic amenities could have been supplied. For this price you could get a suite at Fraser Suites in Perth. Definitely a once off. Good luck trying to find other ‘pet-friendly’ accomodation in the area though. Very disappointing and underwhelming experience.

The only place on town has a monopoly and the lack of competition shows. Everything was only just OK but the entire property needs an upgrade and a more stringent approach to cleanliness

Thanks for your feedback. We are working on a lot of areas at the moment. Covid has made it hard to find and keep staff as their is critical shortages in hospitality across the country. Some things we have done are: Added six staff rooms to the hotel in 2011 costing over 200k, In 2013 we gutted and renovated every room and bathroom to a modern standard costing millions of dollars, we installed wifi in every room and around hotel common areas between 2015 and 2016 costing over 100 thousand dollars, we have replaced all double story verandah supports costing over 100 thousand dollars in 2017, we have installed 250 thousand dollars worth of solar in 2019,2019 we also renovated our breakfast room for guests over 50k, we have completely gutted and renovated our front bar in 2020 over 100k, and gutted and renovated our restaurant in jan 2021 over 150k. Also between 2019 and 2021 we have been replacing all beds with 4 star commercial beds, and replacing all tv's with smart tv's enabling you tube and netflix as well as substantial upgrades in our laundry's and kitchen well over 200k. We have in april 2021 just finished painting every room inside and out for about 150k. We combat terrible dust issues due to the mining industry on our doorstep, we do all this with a smile and endeavor to offer a great service for a very reasonable rate in our area. As you can see we are not resting on our laurels and are working very hard and investing heavily in our venue to make your experience better. Kind regards Nick Bond, Managing director.

The cleanliness was absolutely awful. Very minimal effort was made before we arrived, and during. I don't expect it to be sparkling, but I do expect the basics! The bar staff however, were absolutely amazing. Hang onto them, they are gems!

The Dampier Mermaid - best hotel in the Pilbara
The Mermaid is the only hotel in the Pilbara to have a beautiful location - something I discovered when I first stayed in 1976. Ever since, I have wanted to bring my wife to enjoy it too. This visit was part of a holiday to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. We had a double booking issue on check-in so ur first night was in one of the smaller rooms. Quite small and not much changed since my 1976 but very clean and functional. In response to the double booking issue, we were moved next day to the room with a view that we really wanted and treated to a great sunset-view dinner overlooking the harbour - everything that I had remembered and wanted to show my wife. This hotel is an example of how things can go wrong but an even more brilliant example of how smart ownweship/management fixes problems that make for a 5-star stay. We thoroughly recommend the Mermaid Hotel. Yest it's 50 years old and as on of his friends remarked "a little tired like the owner" but you won't find a better place to stay in thePilbara. Great service, gread food, spotlessly clean and an exquisite view to go with it.
