I'm not sure how this place has good reviews. The Cherokee Lodge is basically a revamped house turned into a hostel.
The entire check in process consisted of getting a door code emailed to us and inside a plain old key to our room. Once we opened the door to our room, we were hit with a horrible smell, which my wife identified as mothballs. The furniture and decor in the room can only be described as "grandma style" and pretty barebones.
The paint in the room was peeling and the windows looked like the original ones that came with the house from a hundred years ago. Maybe the vibe was supposed to be rustic charm, but it was just run down with no effort put into maintaining it. We visited San Diego during a chilly time (40s at night, 50s during the day) and climate control provided was a $20 space heater from Walmart.
The bathroom toilet, sink, and tub were clean, however there was mold on the ceiling. You know why? Because the bathroom had no ventilation fan! The moisture from showers was trapped in there.
Long story short, I've never had reviews lead me astray like this place did. I'd give this a 5/10 (and my wife says that's too generous). We only stayed a couple nights, and I've never been so glad to leave a hotel. The ONLY positive I can give is that it's in a quiet location and within walkable distance of everything.
