Stretching down the western side of Abu Dhabi is The Corniche. This extraordinary road sweeps along 8 kilometres (5 miles) of immaculate waterfront, cycling and pedestrian paths, cafés, restaurants, playgrounds and the renowned Corniche Beach.
The Corniche is an integral part of local life. In addition to being an important thoroughfare, the area offers a relaxing alternative to the city’s hectic business and shopping districts. Unwind in one of the lush, manicured, gardens that line the road. Take a jog or a bicycle ride on the dedicated pathways, or join Emirati families on one of the many playgrounds.
Rising up to the east of the road are some of Abu Dhabi’s tallest skyscrapers, such as Nation Towers and The Landmark. Situated at the southern end of The Corniche is the luxury hotel Emirates Palace and immediately across from The Corniche is the man-made Lulu Island, which is only accessible via private boat.
The Corniche’s main attraction is the outstanding Corniche Beach. The exceptionally clean and safe water earned the beach the coveted Blue Flag status, which is only awarded to beaches with the highest environmental quality. The azure water is calm and there are always lifeguards on duty. Take a swim, or try sea kayaking or water-skiing and afterwards join in a spirited game of beach volleyball. The beach has excellent amenities, including changing facilities, restrooms, umbrella rentals and playgrounds. After time on the beach, browse the wide variety of cafés and shops that line The Corniche.
During rush hour The Corniche gets rather crowded, but this is an excellent time to see the city in transit. There is plenty of free parking within a 5-minute walk of Corniche Beach for those who wish to discover the area on foot. Rent a bicycle to easily explore the entire waterfront.
