Luxury abounds in the United Arab Emirates’ capital city, a destination marked by opulence, eye-catching modern architecture, theme parks and fine dining.

Abu Dhabi has long been thought of as a quieter younger sibling to its lively neighbour Dubai. But as the headquarters to many of the world’s largest oil companies, Abu Dhabi has been coming into its own in recent years. This dense and expanding metropolis is home to some of the world’s tallest buildings. Enjoy views of the incredible skyline, a multitude of beachfront resorts, exciting theme parks and many options for fine dining.

The hotels of Abu Dhabi are the only places in the city that can legally sell alcohol. Lavish resorts and hotels dominate the city’s nightlife and restaurant scene. The seven-star Emirates Palace, located right beside the water, is one of Abu Dhabi’s most glamorous accommodation options. Its guests enjoy access to a private beach, tennis courts, a gym and sporting fields and some of Abu Dhabi’s finest restaurants.

The hotel is near some of the best shopping in town. Stop by the three-storey Abu Dhabi Mall for some retail therapy. Take a trip up the Etihad Towers to enjoy the panoramic views at the Observation Deck at 300.

Hire a car and drive half an hour to Yas Island, the site of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and one of the city’s most popular destinations. It has two great theme parks next door to one another. Take advantage of Abu Dhabi’s year-round warm weather at the Yas Waterworld or hop on one of the world’s fastest roller coasters at Ferrari World.

The summer heat in Abu Dhabi is sweltering, so getting around on foot is not recommended. Instead, make your way around town on the air-conditioned city buses or hire a car at the international airport.

Abu Dhabi adheres to Islamic cultural and religious traditions, especially in matters of dress. It’s not necessary to cover your head in public, but do make sure to dress modestly and to follow any cultural requirements that are specified at individual venues. Women are free to drive and to travel in Abu Dhabi.

A special sunset in the Liwa Desert, on the northern edge of Rub Al’ Khali (The Empty Quarter), the world’s largest uninterrupted sand desert.
I climbed a high sand dune and was treated to an extraordinary sight. Seated on the cushion that was the soft fine sand, I looked out at the iridescent sand dunes that stretched out far and wide, and watched in awe as the bright beautiful sun finally disappeared into the horizon.
