"Absolutely loved our stay at the Fern & Thistle Hotel in Balclutha! The historic charm of the house is beautifully preserved, with a stunning vintage garden full of old roses and unique plants. The amenities are outstanding—from the cozy dry sauna in a barrel cabin to the luxurious hot tubs (one in the room and a massive one in the garden). The countryside views add a peaceful touch, and the complimentary drinks and local beer were a generous bonus. Our room had a super king-size bed and Netflix on the TV, making it the perfect spot to unwind. The owner is warm, polite, and clearly takes pride in every detail. A truly special place—highly recommend! Steam curls in the garden air, roses dream in silence there. Barrel sauna, warm and still, country hush on every hill. Golden beer and velvet bed, gentle words the owner said. In this house, the past is near- peace and beauty, crystal clear."

"The owner John was very personable and knowledgeable and gave advice about more travel. Feeding the alpacas and sheep was a unique experience. The sunset was beautiful and peaceful. Did not book breakfast but owner was accommodating and flexible and added it. Good continental breakfast, good choices. Liked the heated towel rung in bathroom. "

"We had an absolutely fantastic stay at this charming home—it was everything it promised to be and more. The house was warm, cozy, and fully equipped with all the amenities we needed for a comfortable visit.While we were initially surprised that the bathroom was located just off the main cottage, through a breezeway, it was well-heated and thoughtfully set up, so it didn’t pose any inconvenience at all. I'm sure it was already noted and just a reader error on our part. Janet was a truly exceptional host—kind, thoughtful, and incredibly responsive. She went out of her way to make sure we arrived to a warm, well-lit home and even left a few treats for us to enjoy in the morning. Those small touches made such a big difference.The location itself is simply stunning—beautiful and uniquely peaceful, with the beach just out front and sheep grazing in the back. A perfect blend of nature and comfort.All in all, a wonderful stay. We’d love to come back!"
