Boasting several works of art from the local masters, this wonderful little-visited church is a rare haven of peace and quiet.
The Church of Girolamini with its grand and spacious halls and decorative frescoes also has a library attached, housing several impressive works of art. There is also a monastery on the site with a courtyard offering some welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Built on the site of an old palace, the church was built in its place in 1592. Having seen several changes to its architecture, it has managed to stay true to its original design. With 3 chapels and a central nave, it is a wonderful example of Florentine Renaissance design. It also boasts a monastery with its own art gallery and a large historical library now owned by the state.
Step inside the church and marvel at the frescoes and statues by local artists including Reni, whose brilliant portrait of San Giovanni Batista hangs over the altar. The exterior of the building is equally impressive. Viewed from the Piazza Girolamini, you can see the church's beautiful white marble façade. Look up and you will see statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul by the sculptor Giuseppe Sanmartino standing on the top of the church.
Many visitors are drawn here by the monastery attached to the church. Here in the Quadreria gallery, there is a good selection of works by classic Italian painters including Ribera and Sermoneta. The building itself is equally as impressive. The library of the Oratorian Fathers has spacious halls with typically ornate decoration. The finest example of these being the Sala Grande which, as the name suggests, is the largest.
What really adds to the experience of a visit here though is the tree-lined courtyard. It's the perfect venue to sit and relax, enjoy lunch or simply recharge your batteries before heading back to face the bustle of the city.
The Church of Girolamini can be found on Via Duomo opposite Naples Cathedral and admission is free. The church is closed on Sundays.
