This level home is perfectly situated to maximize the views of Point Lobos and is just a few steps to Monastery Beach — famous for diving and pounding ocean swells. Take pleasure in the sweeping panoramic ocean views of Point Lobos and a white sand beach as your backyard. Scuba divers come from far and wide to enjoy the kelp forests, otters, seals, whales and other wildlife found in the waters off Monastery Beach. The Sea Otter cottage offers a peaceful, secluded spot where you are surrounded by nature. Beautiful sunsets are breathtaking and observed from the cottage, the patio or the beach. Steps away is access to costal trails yet it is conveniently located to attractions, dining and shopping. The beds are comfortable and the kitchen is well stocked.A wonderful place to enjoy your morning coffee. Thank you for sharing this special historic place!

The view alone is worth staying here. We had both back doors open any time we were there. The layout is perfect for enjoying the sound of the waves and the view of the sunset. The house is also perfectly located for being able to do day trips to San Francisco or Big Sur. If you are looking for a place to stay that is cozy and has amazing views you found it.

Fabulous location! The cottage was clean, comfortable and well stocked. Lots of nearby trails to hike, and a lovely patio to enjoy the sunset over Point Lobos. Despite being right on the beach, it still felt secluded and peaceful. We hope to come back again soon!

There are very few beach side properties to rent in the area. We scouted this place out the previous year and booked it straight away. Great location and pretty easy access to anywhere on the peninsula. Great views of Point Lobos etc. and loved the history associated directly to the founder.

The Sea Otter cottage surpassed our expectations. The cottage is beautiful, cozy, and has all the comforts of home. We enjoyed cooking every meal because the quality of every kitchen item from pots and pans to knives were top notch and in new condition. We loved the private patio with our own path down to the beach. The views are breathtaking! It was the perfect vacation for us. Definitely will book again.

The location can’t be beat. All essentials provided, beds were comfortable , good amenities with plenty of extra towels, blankets, etc. Second bathroom by entry is small and shower had low water pressure but was not really an issue for us. Can’t wait to return!

Everything we might need was available in Sea Otter Cottage, including beach and trail walks right out the gate! We ate out, we stayed in, we walked, we went to Point Lobos for longer hiking. It didn't even matter that the cool California coastal fog was a frequent companion - it is summer after all! Thank you for sharing your perfect beachside getaway with your guests.

We enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It was convenient to places we visited and the views were beautiful. The kitchen is well equipped and nicely laid out. The couch is very comfortable. I gave it four stars because the smaller bathroom is so tiny that it is hard to use the toilet and its door does not lock or even latch. Also, the hall rugs are loose and I tripped a few times on them.

The photos do not do it justice. A lovely setting and fantastic little cottage. I recently stayed with my sister and cousin for a mini-vacations. We enjoyed the beautiful sunsets each night as we sat with a bottle of local wine and recapped our days adventures. Each morning we sat with a fire and coffee or tea and made plans for the day. The cottage was so central to everything and so much more. I will definitely be back next time with my husband.

Our family of 4 stayed here for a week. We enjoyed every minute. Our boys loved climbing the rocks at the tide pools. We had a crackling fire each night and fell into deep sleep to the sound of waves. Enjoyed sunsets at the beach and wine on the deck. The master bed was like sleeping on a fluffy cloud, so soft. The kitchen was well equipped. We met the guests at the other cottages and everyone was cordial and respectful. The Otter cottage is tucked away so it felt like we had plenty of privacy. This is a magical place. Truly.

Very pleasant rustic small cottage right on Monastery Beach which is more secluded than the main Carmel Beach. I was by myself with my dog, and it is perfect for that purpose. But it also would be for 4 people. Excellent kitchen equipment, very easy to cook meals and eat on the patio, weather permitting. Good beds, fluffy towels, and at night only the sound of the waves to help you sleep. Carmel Meadow Trail is one of the most beautiful ones in the region, full of flowers, sweet scents and gorgeous views of Point Lobos. Somewhat on the expensive side with all the ad-ons, but if you can afford it, you won't regret it. I would highly recommend it.

My husband and I have been fortunate to spend 3 anniversaries on this property- 2019 in the Whaler's, 2021 in the Abalone, and this year in the Sea Otter Cottage. We LOVE all 3 of them. This location is so amazing- incredible views of the beach, ocean and Point Lobos. All 3 are very well equipped, maintained and cleaned. The Whaler is obviously better suited to larger groups, due to its size. The Whaler and Abalone have more unobstructed ocean views from the large windows, however, the Sea Otter has the benefit of more privacy/seclusion since it is tucked back in a bit. We preferred this location, as it also comes with more direct, private beach access. We would stay here every year if we could. If you are lucky enough to be able to find any of these open during your dates of travel, book it! You will not be disappointed.

This place cost a little more than we usually pay for vacation rentals, but it was wonderful. Just steps from the beach, with easy access to walks along the shore right from the cottage. One of our favorite activities was to walk to the tide pools just north of the cottage and look at the interesting marine life (crabs, sea anemones, starfish, sea urchins, ...). And there's also easy access (5 minutes) to all the shops you need in Carmel. The cottage itself was in very good shape, and we LOVED having a dishwasher. We could see sea otters, seals, and dolphins not just from the beach, but from the windows of the cottage. Binoculars were helpfully provided. There was a very nice patio area too, unfortunately it was too cold/windy/rainy for us to get any use out of it. Great rental!

We are always apprehensive when booking a vacation rental online from photos however the Whaler's Cottage was everything we could have asked for. The night before our arrival we stayed at Post Ranch which has always been one of our favorite getaways however as much as we loved Post the Cottage was so enchanting from the time we drove down the private road. The house is immaculate. I must say I am a cootie freak and I was perfectly at ease and comfortable in the home. The beds and linens were super comfortable..the kitchen and baths well equipped. We were even able to order fire wood waiting for us so we had the fireplace going every day. What is really amazing however is the location. Extremely private in a large fenced property with two other houses right on the beach. The views out every window and the sound of the waves were mesmerizing. To be able to step out your door and take a stroll on the beach is well worth the rental cost. There is also a public walkway that starts next to the property that leads along the beach right to the center of Carmel which we absolutely loved. Obviously we can't say enough about what this family has preserved generation to generation and we felt privileged to be allowed to share it even for a few days. We will definitely be returning as soon as we can! Date of arrival November 26, 2016

We had an absolutely incredible experience and it is exactly what the doctor ordered! Our family needed a break from the Covid madness and away from the computer screens. This truly is a slice of heaven. The Sea Otter Cottage is closest to the water and waves crashing on the beach. You will NOT find better photo opps (The sunsets are breathtaking almost beyond compare!). The Owners feedback and careful notes and instructions are SPOT ON! We think our beloved Golden Retriever had the best time having all of us in one room or on the beach at one time! And there lies another great value add in that it is so impossible to find a very nice property on VRBO that allows dogs and although you need to pay an additional fee to have a dog, it is well worth it especially as they are part of your family! There are many properties that allow dogs on Vrbo but we have yet to find one as special as the Sea Otter Cottage! Notes: 1. Take in the sunset each night on the beach. 2. Don’t bring groceries as the Safeway just up the road is one of the best grocery stores ever and has evvvverything (including firewood which you will need!) 3. Walking trails abound and be sure to bring a cup of coffee with you on morning walks. 4. Lafayette Bakery just up the road! Outstanding fresh baked goods and great coffees! 5. The beds are firm but oh so very comfortable! 6. The cottage is well appointed with everything you need and has a charcoal Weber out back too! 7. Internet works great but no streaming in case you don’t want to fully “disconnect!” 8. The entrance in coming from the north is absolutely a hairpin turn and extra care needs to be taken when making the right hand turn not only for the cars behind you but also as you complete the turn when there are many cars parked utilizing the beach access with people around, especially on weekends. 9. The owners warnings about the “Monastery Beach” (aka: Mortuary Beach) are very true in that it is verrrrrry dangerous ! Steep drop off and huge undertow. 10. The central heating works great and fast as does the fireplace that really draws. Big comfy couch for a family of four to spread out and watch “ Yellowstone” on and play games! So have a blast! You’ll be hooked the moment you open the back doors to that incredible bay view and breathe in that incredible ocean air! Thank you for a truly wondrous and memorable stay and for sharing your little slice of heaven! We will absolutely be back!
