My family really enjoyed our stay at the Adler Familiy's Sunset Captiva property. The condo was spacious, clean, well maintained, well equipped, and we had no issues with appliances, water pressure, air conditioning etc..The property owner had an office with a computer and printer available for guest use. He also left helpful information and brochures of various restaurants, activities, and nearby shopping. The condo's proximity to the little "hub" area of Captiva is within walking distance. We rented bikes and our boys rented Vespas to tour around Captiva and neighboring Sanibel. We would definitely recommend this property and would stay here again.
Unfortunately, we arrived (Aug 7-14) right at the worst of the dreaded Red Tide that destroyed the beaches of Captiva ( as well as most of the Gulf Coast of Florida) for most of our stay. The number of dead fish and the horrendous, toxic smell from their rotting corpses was absolutely disgusting. The municipality of Captiva Island should be ashamed of themselves for not moving fast enough and diligently enough to clean up Captiva Beach. Even though this is claimed to be a "natural disaster" (natural certainly not to this degree- human disregard for nature to blame), a great deal more could have been done to support tourists. If this was our first trip to Captiva Island and we had not known its true beauty from prior trips, we would never bother to return again. Many first timers we met were disgruntled by the lack of clean up. Given tourism is the basis for Captiva's economy, one would think a lot more could have been done to clean up the beaches.
