The majestic Bruges Belfry (Belfort) is the most iconic structure in the heart of Bruges. This belfry stands 83 metres (272 feet) tall above the town square. It is an impressive piece of architecture that offers incredible views across the city. On the way up to the viewing platform are a number of curious attractions, but make sure you are comfortable with being high up off the ground this attraction won’t suit visitors with a fear of heights.
Inspect the Belfort from the ground level. The lower sections date back to the last half of the 13th century and were built to replace an earlier tower that burnt down. The octagonal section was added in the 15th century. The Gothic-style parapet has only been on the Belfort since 1822.
Experience the dizzying height of the Belfort and climb the 366 steps to the viewing platform. When the weather is clear there are uninterrupted views of Bruges and the surrounding countryside. Even if the weather is cloudy it is still worth a trip to the top. Browse the old treasury room where the city's valuable goods were sealed many years ago. Admire the details of the belfry's beautiful clock face and the 18th-century carillon, which has 47 bells. These bells can be heard ringing throughout the day and concerts are sometimes held here.
The steps in the Belfort are narrow and there is two-way traffic going up and down. If you don’t like heights or climbing up narrow stairs, relax in a café below with some Belgian chocolate and a coffee and admire the tower from the ground.
The Belfort is situated in the centre of the city. It is open daily and there is an admission fee to climb to the viewing platform. Children are allowed to the top of the tower with supervision. Long queues are common, particularly during the peak season, so come early in the day. Any wait will be worth it for the views when you reach the top of the tower. Get here on foot or by bus.
