The smallest of the three waterfalls that make up the Niagara Falls park, but it’s still the spectacular home to the Cave of the Winds.

Bridal Veil Falls is the smallest of the three waterfalls that make up the Niagara Falls park, reaching a width of just 17 metres and falling no further than around 55 metres, striking and splashing against the boulders all the way down to the Maid of the Mist pool. It is the central cascade of the three falls, and is separated from the American Falls by the tiny Luna Island.

Yet this is the spot where you’ll find one of the most popular attractions anywhere around the Niagara Falls, to which visitors from all over regularly flock. When you’re in the region, you really shouldn’t miss the Cave of the Winds. Take the tour that brings you to within a matter of metres from the water, feeling the cooling and refreshing spray as it hits your face, while you admire the waterfall from this special and unusual vantage point.

The original cave was nestled behind the Bridal Veil Falls, and was discovered in 1834 before it was finally opened to curious visitors seven years later, soon becoming a major attraction bringing many tourists to Goat Island. It takes its name from the strong winds that breeze their way through the cave thanks to the powerful thrust of the falls above. That original cave was blocked off in the 1950s after a rock slide, and the cave that stands today is on the same site.

You can see it for yourself by heading for Goat Island and then taking a 53-metre elevator ride to the foot of Bridal Veil Falls. You’ll be shown round by a guide, and will be able to enjoy the view as you stand just six metres away from the falls.

A plastic poncho and a pair of sandals will be provided, but you’ll also need to bring a waterproof bag to keep your camera and any other valuables dry.

The Cave of the Winds opens every day from spring until late October. You can park on Goat Island free of charge, or walk over the pedestrian bridge that connects the park’s two halves.
