Alum Rock Park is packed with history. Originally home to native Americans, who called it Aguague. or watering place, it was designated as a public park in 1872. Since then it has attracted San Joseans seeking a breath of fresh air close to the city and who come to enjoy its 291 hectares of woodland, walking trails, picnic areas and creeks. From the 1890s to the 1930s, the park was nationally known as a health spa with mineral baths and a hotel, but after World War II, the park refocused on its natural surroundings. The park which is located within the Alum Rock Canyon, part of the Diablo Range, takes its name from nearby rock formations, which were erroneously thought to contain aluminium. The name remained and these days, visitors can hike up the hillside or through scenic woodland and enjoy a number of outdoor activities such as horse-riding, cycling or picnicking. If you're feeling energetic, the 3.6-kilometre North Rim Trail to Eagle Rock is deservedly popular. The views over the Bay Area make the steep climb worthwhile – Remember to bring sun protection and water if you're walking in the summer. For something a bit more gentle, the South Rim Trail is a good choice: by following its shaded paths you can see native flora and fauna and catch some stunning views of the creek and surrounding area. The easiest stroll of them all though is the Penitencia Creek Trail. Whenever you need a break, you will find plenty of lookout points and benches to rest on – handy while you scope out the surrounds, looking for bobcats, red-tailed hawks and even rattlesnakes.Alum Rock Park is a 20-minute drive from downtown and is open Tuesday to Sunday. Buses do connect the park to downtown, but the stop is just over 20 minutes' walk from the entrance. You have to pay to park.
