Try the local sangria and take in the beach view from this hilltop town with Spanish-Christian architecture, picturesque coves and a charming old town.
There are plenty of attractions packed into the little bohemian town of Altea, near Benidorm on the Costa Blanca. Discover fascinating Spanish-Christian architecture, Moorish-influenced cuisine and exciting watersports in just a few days or as part of a daytrip along the coast.
This little town offers a snapshot of Spanish history through its heritage buildings and art galleries. Altea is not as busy as nearby Benidorm, but its relaxed atmosphere makes it all the better to take in the sights. Charming whitewashed houses are dotted along the cobbled streets that wind down the town’s hill to the Mediterranean Sea.
Take a walk through town and explore the Poble Antic (Historic Quarter) with its high walls that stretch all the way to Altea’s highest point. Here you’ll find the landmark bell tower of the parish church, The Virgin of Consuelo.
Wander along the maze of cobblestone streets and see the blue Mediterranean Sea through gaps between heritage Spanish-Christian buildings. Find a lookout point and catch a view of the beach and the blue-and-white dome of the Our Lady of Solace Church.
Stop by one of the cafés or restaurants and enjoy a refreshing drink as you take in the view. Try Altea’s traditional recipe for sangria, made up of wine, fruit and regional herbs.
Buy some fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers at the Altea market in the Old Town. More markets can be found by the Altea sports centre, where vendors sell such wares as traditional Spanish dresses and even musical instruments.
Palm tree-lined beaches are just a short distance away. Go swimming or try out watersports such as paddleboarding or wakeboarding. Explore the coastline’s coves and flourishing aquatic worlds with a snorkelling or scuba diving tour.
Altea is a 15-minute drive northeast of Benidorm. The town is also accessible by bus and train. Note that the Old Town square and the area surrounding the church are not navigable by car. Altea’s beach isn’t as sandy as others along the Costa Blanca, so be sure to pack good footwear and a mat or foldable chair for relaxing on the beach.
