Established in 1982 by art collector Agung Rai, The Agung Rai Museum of Art or ARMA, was built to reflect the philosophy of its founder. As such, the building could more accurately be described as a cultural centre rather than museum. Its mission is very simple to preserve Balinese culture and maintain its links with the surrounding community. It was officially opened as a museum in 1996 along with an onsite resort. The fact that you have the choice to simply enjoy the paintings in the museum, take part in a workshop or stay in the resort make this a great place to visit.Inside the centre, you will find traditional artworks such as paintings in the traditional Kamasan style. There are wonderful pieces of mid-century art on display both from Balinese and European artists, who chose to make the island their home. These include several works by Walter Spies, a German painter who settled in Bali in 1927. In keeping with its philosophy, the centre hosts a number of live performances and lectures. These give visitors the opportunity to discover more about the type of Hinduism practised in Bali, learn about traditional architecture and listen to traditional forms of music. There is also a whole range of interactive displays and workshops in which to participate. These range from Balinese cooking, basket weaving and Batik, the traditional fabric dyeing process. Wood carvings feature heavily in traditional Balinese art and you can practise traditional techniques using a variety of different tools. There is plenty for children to get involved with, be it learning traditional dances or creating Hindu offerings using leaves and bamboo. Outside, you’ll find wonderful tropical gardens. There is also a restaurant and café here if you find yourself in need of refreshments. Both offer traditional Balinese fare alongside well-known Italian dishes. The onsite resort offers luxury accommodation in a series of rooms and villas, some with private pools. This would make an excellent base to explore the town and surrounding countryside. The Agung Rai Museum is situated in central Ubud within easy walking distance of the town centre. The museum charges for admission. Free parking is available nearby. For full details of the workshop programme, live events and accommodation, check the museum’s website.
